Read Anywhere: How Offline Mode Works

Engineering Team·Jan 15, 2026· 4 min read

On a plane, in the masjid basement, or on a commute with no signal — your Quran should always open instantly. Here's how we made the reader work offline.

One of the most common requests we received was simple: "I want to read even when I have no internet." Masjids often have poor signal. Flights have none. Commutes pass through dead zones. A Quran app that needs a connection to open a surah is a Quran app that fails exactly when many people most want to read.

So we rebuilt the reader to work offline first.

Caching the Text

When you open a surah, its full text, translation, and transliteration are stored locally in your browser. The next time you open it — connection or not — it loads instantly from that local copy rather than waiting on the network.

We version this cache carefully, so that when we improve the text rendering (as we recently did with the Basmala handling), your device quietly refreshes to the corrected data without you having to do anything.

Preloading What You'll Need Next

The reader anticipates. While you read one surah, it quietly prepares the next, and while one ayah of audio plays, it warms the audio for the following ayah — and even the first ayah of the next surah. The result is that continuing to read or listen feels seamless, with none of the one-to-two-second pauses that used to appear between verses.

Audio That Survives a Weak Connection

Recitation audio is streamed through a resilient layer that automatically falls back to an alternate source if the primary one is unavailable in your region. If one server is blocked or down, playback quietly switches to another rather than simply failing.

What Still Needs a Connection

The AI recitation correction relies on your browser's speech recognition, which currently needs a connection. Syncing progress across devices also requires being online. But the core act — opening the Mushaf and reading — now works anywhere, instantly.

Open a few surahs while you have signal, and they will be waiting for you when you do not.
